Excerpts from the most recent NMPTA newsletter and publications…
Parents and Teachers: the POWER of PTA PTA is the Parent Teacher Association, The largest most recognizable Parent Advocacy Organization in the country. The power of PTA is in its MEMBERSHIP! New Mexico PTA was established in 1914 and is still going strong 94 years later. New Mexico PTA has over 7000 members statewide. PTA helps improve education, health, and safety for EVERY CHLID! All our members’ voices count. P is for parents. But Sometimes there is the forgotten T, teachers are just as important! Parents, teacher’s administration, custodians, cafeteria workers, and community members all play a role in the success of OUR children. We all need to work together. Each of us needs to be that “ONE Person” to make a difference! Membership drives should be on going. Don’t forget to include all people that have contact with your child. Here are some ideas to get them involved. Provide a potluck breakfast or lunch a few times a year for the staff. Thank them for being a part of all students’ success and take that opportunity to discuss the value and importance of joining PTA. Award them with a staff party when they have reached 100% teacher and staff membership. Request and USE a bulletin board to showcase current information about PTA activities. Most important, ASK. The number one reason that most cite for not joining is because they were never asked.
Trust Lands The State of New Mexico has a portion of land set aside for lease, for trade and sometimes for sale for the purpose of supporting education. Currently this amounts to 13 million acres and has such diverse use as drilling, mining, grazing and wind energy. There is a wealth of information on the state land office website www.nmstatelands.org.
NMPTA monitors changes in land use and advocates on behalf of all students and schools in New Mexico. Contact Leona Snipes for more information.
Warning Fundraising Fraud All units take precautions to protect your assets. In these hard economic times there have been reports of people wanting to make a quick buck off unsuspecting non profits. Please make sure that ALL companies and individuals that are offering fundraising opportunities to your schools are licensed with the state of New Mexico and your city, have bonding & liability insurance (ask for a certificate of insurance). Check with the Better Business Bureau on their status. Even if you know them personally ask for a copy of all the appropriate paperwork. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Example… Some reports of groups offering 80% profit should be a red flag.
