History
In 1950, concerned parents and teachers, recognizing the need to assist some students with clothing and shoes, began the BCCPTA Clothing Bank. Although APS donates facility space, the BCCPTA Clothing Bank is not an APS program. The Clothing Bank does not receive funding from APS, and the Clothing Bank employees are not APS employees.
Objective
Sponsored by the Bernalillo County Councils of PTAs, the BCCPTA Clothing Bank is a non-profit organization whose primary objective is to provide clothing to any student in Kindergarten through twelfth grade who is in need. In meeting this objective, the BCCPTA helps keep children in school who might not attend because of their clothes and allows children to concentrate on their school work, not their clothing.
Each year, the PTA Clothing Bank serves more than 2800 students in the Albuquerque area. It is very important that each of these students is treated with respect and kindness and leaves the BCCPTA Clothing Bank feeling good about himself or herself. Adults who came to the Clothing Bank as children recount the positive experiences they had. School counselors and volunteers are often moved to tears because of a child’s excitement when visiting the Clothing Bank.

Meet the Children
A seventh grader, wearing the same clothes for the fifth day in a row, can’t concentrate on her teacher’s lecture because of the pointed stares of other students. She skips the rest of her classes. A first grader doesn’t go to school because his parents can’t afford the school uniform. When he finally attends class, he is behind in his reading and never catches up. A kindergartner walks to school without a coat on a bitterly cold January morning. He arrives at class shivering uncontrollably.
Services Provided
The Clothing Bank is open to serve students and receive donations Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. following the traditional school calendar. A student who needs clothing is referred by the principal, counselor, nurse, or teacher. After obtaining permission for this service from a parent or guardian, a volunteer or school staff member brings the student to the BCCPTA Clothing Bank. Each student receives two sets of clothing, socks, and underwear. If needed and if available, each student also receives shoes and a jacket or coat. Students may visit the clothing bank twice during the school year, once in the fall and once in the spring.
