Union Helps Kids with Homework Through Dial-A Teacher

AFT New Mexico is teaming up with the Albuquerque Teachers federation to make after school tutoring available to kids across the state.

Dial-A-Teacher is a free homework service available to students statewide. Students can call Monday through Thursday, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 1-800-947-8839, or in Albuquerque at 344-3571, and receive homework help from an ATF member who is a licensed teacher.

Callers can get help in English or Spanish.

Dial-A-Teacher is marketed to K-12 students, but parents and college students call from time to time as well.

The service has been in existence since 1991, with the exception of a one-year hiatus. It was revived in October 2004, and is an ongoing project of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation’s Teacher Leadership Foundation (ATF’s non-profit foundation), contingent upon annual funding. The number of calls each year varies, but the peak annual volume has exceeded 3500 calls.
